We are here and alive,
Let us make a life for ourselves,
And end our rebellion,
Against destiny.
Peace and prosperity forever!

— Creed of the rabbits of Akolan, Ember Rising, pg. 65

Akolan is a rabbit slave city located in the High Bleaks, near Morbin's Lair. It is under operation of Blackhawk's minions.

History[]

The slave city of Akolan was founded during the time of King Whitson Mariner, its first denizens having been snatched from Seddleton and Ayman Lake during the Battle of Ayman Lake. There used to be raptor sentinels keeping watch over the slaves, but after Garten Longtreader's arrival, they were taken away.[1]

Government[]

Akolan was ruled by Longtreader Command under the Commandant. Every rabbit there was required to have clear red scarf at their necks, called a preymark—a symbol of their slavery. The government was very oppressive, with personal property virtually nonexistent and informers everywhere.

Composition[]

The Districts[]

There were six districts in Akolan, all divided from one another by an expanse of garbage and waste.

First District[]

The First District was the original Akolan district, and presumably was first settled by the rabbits abducted from Seddleton and Ayman Lake.

Second District[]

Little is known about the Second District, except that it was apparently established after the First District.

Third District[]

Little is known about the Third District, except that it was apparently established after the First and Second Districts.

Fourth District[]

The Fourth District was the final standard district of Akolan, and was populated by rabbits brought most recently to the city. Sometime after members of the Longtreader family were brought to Akolan, the Lords of Prey largely ceased to bring captives back to the city, preferring to kill them in the field. The Fourth District was closest in proximity to the Fifth or Lepers' District, and its clinic was thus charged with what little treatment was provided to the apparent sufferers of this disease. During the Longtreaders' time there, part of the Fourth District was reassigned to the Fifth, its denizens having apparently contracted leprosy.

Whittle, Sween, and Jacket Longtreader settled in the Fourth District, and were later joined by Heather during her temporary residency in the city. Heather was also assigned to work in the District Four clinic, where she helped a number of patients, saving the life of Mills using Jone's tonic.

Fifth District[]

The Fifth District, also known as the Lepers' District, was a district set aside for lepers in Akolan. It was expanded some time before Heather Longtreader's arrival in the city, with part of the Fourth District being split off into the Lepers' District. Whether any actual lepers were known to inhabit the district at any point is unknown, as members of the Seventh District used the illusion of such a disease as a cover. In actuality, the Lepers' District served primarily to conceal the activities of the Seventh District, including the entrances to their tunnel network.

Sixth District[]

The Sixth District, marked in its center by a circular square, was created as a home for those rabbits who choose to collaborate with the Lords of Prey under the leadership of Garten Longtreader's Longtreader Command. Its inhabitants enjoyed many privileges and authority over the rabbits of the outlying district, and thus developed a superior attitude. Workers were employed constantly to keep the district clean of the ash that fell constantly upon Akolan, and outwallers were often employed to perform various menial tasks within the district.

Heather Longtreader was brought to the Sixth District shortly after her arrival in Akolan, and later dragged out again after visiting Longtreader Command. She and her mother Sween Longtreader were later brought back to Longtreader Command after being arrested by Vitton. The population of Akolan was gathered the next day for Victory Day "festivities". In actuality, the Lords of Prey intended to take all the city's children as part of a cruel act of establishing dominance over all Natalia.

However, this plan was thwarted when the Seventh District, under the leadership of Whittle Longtreader as the Tunneler, invaded the Sixth District. Many of its members posed as inhabitants of the Lepers' District and, joined by sympathetic citizens, they evacuated many of the children and elderly rabbits from Akolan city center. They then retreated to the Lepers District as the Lords of Prey arrived and began attacking, though the Sixth District was left in disarray.

Seventh District[]

The Seventh District was the location of a faction of the Resistance established in Akolan, a city of slave rabbits in the High Bleaks. It was founded by the first Tunneler, who was taken captive by the Lords of Prey from the deck of the ship Vanguard during the Battle of Ayman Lake. A number of other Tunnelers succeeded him, building on the efforts of their predecessors. Presumably, the name of the Seventh District came about after the other six districts of Akolan had been established.

Since then, the Seventh District has been led by a series of rulers, all known by the title of the Tunneler and is encompassed within the Lepers' District, as a way of concealing and protecting the entrance from the Wrongtreaders. Rather than being a main residence for anyone of the Resistance (besides the Tunneler), the Seventh District seemed to serve as a meeting place and center of discussion and labor for the freedom of the Resistance in Akolan.

Other areas[]

Academy[]

The academy was a facility in the Sixth District where Akolan's children were sent to be "educated", i.e. indoctrinated by those loyal to Morbin's tyrannical regime. Students would spend roughly ten-day periods at the school, both day and night, and then be allowed to return home for visits of three days and two nights. This schedule was hard to pinpoint, and undoubtedly served to help the young students in their instructed task of spying on their relatives and reporting any suspicious behavior. Every year, about five percent of the student body would disappear after receiving a special diet of fruits and vegetables, with their parents being told they would be sent to another prison camp. The horrific truth was that those chosen for this "adventure" would be killed and prepared as a ceremonial meal for the Six.

Potato fields[]

Several large fields of potatoes were maintained in an area of Akolan just north of District Six and provided the primary source of food for the inhabitants of the outer districts. Rabbits in Akolan thus learned, by necessity, to prepare potato-based sustenance such as soup, tea, and even cake.

Reservoir[]

The reservoir was a large body of water in the northwest section of Akolan, and provided water to the entire city. An aqueduct ran from the reservoir to a water tower in District Six. Heather would use this aqueduct to escape the Sixth District on Victory Day.
