The Archer's Cup is an archery tournament previously held in First Warren and later between the secret citadels.

History[]

The Archer's Cup was begun in First Warren by the grandfather of Lord Ramnor. It continued through the reign of King Jupiter, who presented the victor's cup to such notables as Rand Bowyer of Harbone and the older brother of Clay Fletcher. Even after King Jupiter's fall and the ensuing upheaval, the event continued to be held by the rabbits of the Cause.

Shortly before the Citadel Congress at Cloud Mountain, the Archer's Cup was held at Halfwind Citadel. Nate Flynn of the Bracers and Jo Shanks were among the competitors and ended up being among the three finalists. At the insistence of Lord Ramnor, Captain Frye, and Lieutenant Drand, the final round was reworked into a simulation of battle. This was done to prepare the competitors for the possibility of imminent war.

This contest involved the finalists having to hit three targets, with only one archer being able to strike the center of the final target and thus win the cup. Ultimately Nate Flynn was victorious, while Jo Shanks came in second.[1] Jo would later recount these events to Emma, who would reference it shortly before discharging him from Cloud Mountain's hospital. She also tried to dispel his rueful consideration of the event, pointing out that coming in second to one of the most respected archers in Natalia was an achievement in itself.[2]

Cole and Heyna Blackstar were also familiar with the event and its outcome and would tease Jo about it while journeying with Emma and him to Blackstone. Though readily admitting that Nate had been the rightful champion, he also confessed a willingness to take part in another such contest. Jo would prove more reluctant, however, when he was first informed of the organization of the Ultimate Archer's Cup.[3]
